Terras Gauda
Terras Gauda winery is, without doubt, one of the top 5 wineries in the D.O. Rias Baixas, in Galicia, northwest coast of Spain, and one of the most recognized Spanish wineries both nationally and internationally. Founded in 1990 in O Rosal by José María Fonseca, its current president, it grew with a philosophy of elaborating singular wines, with their own identity, always working with the local varieties of O Rosal. Many times, even taking a brave approach to innovate and recover some local, almost extinct grapes like Caíño Blanco, to elaborate the exquisite and unique wine "La Mar" with it.
Terras Gauda is the name Romans used to refer to this land, meaning "Lands of happiness", during their occupation of the Iberian Peninsula, or Hispania. Terras Gauda winery decided to use this name because it reflects and connects them to the region.
Currently the largest in volume in the D.O. Rias Baixas, its wines are known for its unmatched quality as well the winery for its compromise with sustainability and innovation. At present, Terras Gauda is leading in Spain the European project I+D+I, which incorporates the latest technology available collecting satellite information to continue improving the quality and sustainability of the vineyards.
The vineyards are located in the privileged O Rosal valley, very near the Miño river, natural border between Spain and Portugal, and very close to its river mouth into the wild Atlantic ocean. Located at an altitude of between 50-150 meters above sea level, they are privileged with an exceptional micro-climate which provides mild temperatures, little frost and plenty of rain.
The soils of slate, are unique in the region, where granite is predominant, providing Terras Gauda wines with minerality and singularity.
